Fireplaces remain one of the most desired features in homes. Beyond aesthetics, today’s fireplaces serve as efficient heat sources, design anchors, and lifestyle upgrades. As a builder, understanding the mechanics behind each type helps you guide clients toward the right choice for comfort, cost and performance.
Wood-Burning Fireplaces
Wood-burning fireplaces deliver the traditional crackle, scent and radiant warmth homeowners associate with traditional fireplaces.
Air is drawn into the firebox (where the burning wood is) from the home or dedicated outside air supply. Smoke and gases then vent through a chimney to the exterior of the home. Heat radiates outward through masonry or a metal firebox.
Wood-Burning Fireplaces are good for rustic or traditional designs and where chimney installation is feasible.
Gas Fireplaces
Gas fireplaces are popular for their convenience and efficiency. They offer real flames without the mess of wood. Gas fireplaces can be operated with natural gas or propane and utilize an electronic ignition that lights the pilot light to start the flame. Gas fireplaces come in a variety of styles and you can choose and control the flame pattern.
With gas fireplaces you have two choices for venting, you can vent directly to the exterior of the home if you have the flexibility. This will pull air from outside and vent all gases outdoors. If you do not have the flexibility to vent to the exterior you can install a vent-free option which doesn’t require a chimney or vent.
Gas firepalces are great for new construction or renovations due to the flexibility of installation.
Electric Fireplaces
Electric fireplaces are the easiest to install and most versatile in placement. These fireplaces will require a plug to the electric and showcase a LED or Holographic simulated flame for your visual enjoyment. Some models offer more than just looks and can add some supplemental heat to your space.
Homeowners like electric fireplaces for their convenience and style more than heat output. Electric fireplaces have styles from traditional to contemporary.
Outdoor Fireplaces & Fire Features
Outdoor fire features are now considered essential elements in outdoor living design.
Wood-burning outdoor fireplaces – Traditional chimney structure outdoors.
Gas outdoor fireplaces or fire pits – Use gas lines to create reliable outdoor flame.
Ethanol burners – Portable with contemporary styling.
Used for patios, pool areas, outdoor kitchens and more where homeowners are emphasizing indoor/outdoor living.
When looking at fireplaces you need to consider
Venting feasibility – Does the structure accommodate a chimney or direct-vent pipe?
Heat requirement – Is the fireplace decorative, supplemental, or primary heat?
Maintenance expectations – Will you want to do ash cleanup or have an annual gas service?
Budget & installation timeline
Aesthetic goals – Are you looking for modern, traditional, rustic?
Fireplaces are more than heat sources—they are architectural statements. As a builder, understanding how each type functions allows us to guide you through performance, cost, and design decisions with confidence. Whether you’re framing a traditional wood-burning hearth or installing sleek electric wall units, the right fireplace elevates the entire home experience.
